Riot unit taking shape in northern Bohemia | Prague Monitor

…the first eleven newly admitted officers are to join the police in Varnsdorf, a town in the Sluknov area where demonstrations were the most extensive and most violent last summer and autumn.

The area’s residents then protested against rising petty crime for which they blamed local Romanies. They also criticised the government and police’s alleged failure to cope with the problem.

Tension in the region escalated in reaction to several attacks on majority population members by armed Romanies last summer.
